- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) treatments , including:
- Lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema (LVRS) involves removal of sections of damaged lung tissue to improve the residual lung function and respiratory mechanics of patients with emphysema.
- Pulmonary rehabilitation, a non-surgical approach, has clear benefits for patients with COPD. The comprehensive program includes exercise training in endurance and strength, education, nutrition counseling, and support/ counseling services.
- Treatments for cystic fibrosis
- To treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), we offer patients minimally invasive endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS).
- Treatment of esophageal disorders, including esophageal cancer, Barrett's disease and GERD
- For such problems as endobronchial tumors or tracheobronchial obstructions, our interventional bronchoscopy program draws on the full resources of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, offering innovative approaches to diagnostic and therapeutic care.
- For patients with lung cancer, emphysema or other lung disorders, lung resection, involves removal of a portion of the lung (lobectomy) or the whole lung (pneumonectomy). These procedures involve either an incision in the chest (open surgery), or a minimal access approach to remove the diseased area of the lung.
- Lung transplantation offers a return to improved breathing and an excellent quality of life for patients suffering from advanced emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, or other debilitating respiratory disorders.
- Myasthenia gravis treatments
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT) or Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR), a unique method for treating cancers growing in the trachea and bronchial air passage, is also employed in treating esophageal disorders.
- Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) is used to treat chronic blockages of the arteries in the lungs.
- Thoracic minimally invasive and video assisted surgery (VATS) is being used for both diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for a number of chest problems that previously required large, open surgical incisions.
