Immunotherapy Fellowship
The immunotherapy fellow will be exposed to all aspects of current immunotherapy as it relates to the patient with cancer. This includes participation in the pre-treatment screening and management of potential treatment candidates, exposure to both in-patient and out-patient procedures, management of treatment-related complications, and follow-up of patients after therapy. In addition, the fellows will have the opportunity to learn basic immunology and understand the rationale behind biologic therapy protocol design by attending weekly conferences, journal clubs, and active participation in immunotherapeutic clinical protocols.
Treatments with interleukin-2 (IL-2), interferon-alpha (IFN-), granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), monoclonal antibodies, and novel vaccines are administered to patients with various histologic diagnoses and stages of disease on this service. The fellow will be part of an active immunotherapy multi-disciplinary team that includes attending physicians in Medical, Surgical and radiation Oncology, dermatology, neurosurgery, tumor immunology, clinical research nurses, and data managers. Fellows should be familiar with the basic immunological principles underlying current treatment strategies and be able to evaluate and treat patients requiring immunotherapy at the end of their rotation.
