Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Fellowship

The advanced Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Fellowship offers a 1 year position in NewYork-Presbyterian hospital under the leadership of 3 board certified Pediatric Transplant hepatologists and 3 dedicated Pediatric Liver Transplant surgeons.

The goal of the one-year program is to produce competent pediatric hepatologists who will develop into leaders in the field. The objective of the fellowship is to provide outstanding clinical and research training so that Board eligible pediatric gastroenterologist candidates become independent hepatology consultants and meet all eligibility criteria for the American Board of Pediatrics Transplant Hepatology Certificate of Added Qualification Examination. During the year of training our Pediatric Transplant Hepatology fellow will gain progressive clinical mastery in a broad range of clinical hepatology problems including a wide range of general acute and chronic hepatic diseases including: 

  • Diagnosis and management for acute liver failure
  • Diagnosis and management of portal hypertension
  • Diagnosis and management of chronic cholestatic disorders
  • Diagnosis and management of liver infectious diseases
  • Evaluation and intervention for biliary diseases including post-transplant complications
  • Assessment and intervention of vascular liver anomalies and complications
  • Evaluation, selection and procurement for deceased donor and living donor liver transplantation
  • Diagnosis and management of liver cancers
  • Diagnosis and management of metabolic diseases of the liver
  • Nutritional interventions for disorders of liver disease
  • Training on procedures: liver biopsy, endoscopic management of portal hypertension, FibroScan

Fellows will interact closely with fellows and faculty from other subspecialty divisions within Pediatrics, Radiology, Critical Care Medicine, Interventional Radiology, Pathology, Genetics/Metabolic, General Surgery and Transplant Surgery.

The Pediatric Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation performs 20-25 pediatric liver transplants per year and follows an additional 300 post-transplant patients. We work closely with our very busy adult transplantation program. Faculty members of the Pediatric Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation are recognized as leading clinicians, researchers and educators in the field of pediatric hepatology and liver transplantation and are currently involved in national and local research studies of pediatric liver transplantation, acute liver failure, biliary atresia, autoimmune liver diseases, portal hypertension, hepatitis B and C treatment, transplant immunology, Intestinal Failure Associated Liver Disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The fellows in this program have numerous opportunities for participation in clinical and translational research. 

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition has 17 full-time faculty including four CAQ Certified Pediatric Hepatologists. Our active Pediatric GI fellowship includes 6 fellows in training who work closely with the current Transplant Hepatology Fellow.
