  • Cystic Fibrosis—trials studying new treatments for the management of cystic fibrosis.
  • Immunotherapy—Vaccination with NYLESO-1 Recombinant Protein combined with Nontanide-51 as Immunotherapy Strategy for Lung Cancer Patients.
  • Interstitial Lung Disease and Pulmonary Fibrosis / AVONEX® Undergoing Multi-center Trial—AVONEX® (interferon beta-1a) to inhibit the decline in pulmonary function in patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). (Larry L. Schulman, MD)
  • Lobectomy—Study of tumor growth promoting factors after minimally invasive lobectomy vs. open lobectomy as evaluated by levels of circulating growth factors, their binding proteins and receptors.
  • NY-ELCAP—To study early detection methods for lung cancer.
  • Oxaliplatin—A trimodal treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma. (Robert Taub, MD, 2003)
  • PET/CT scanning—A more targeted treatment of lung cancer. (Richard M. Gewanter, MD, 2004)
  • Specialized chemotherapy trial—For treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. (Mark E. Ginsburg, MD, 2004)
  • Stage IA Lung Cancer—Selenium as a chemoprevention agent, to reduce the risk of developing second lung cancers.
  • Stage IB and Stage II Lung Cancer—Intergroup randomized trial of Iressa following surgery. This new drug, which has few side effects, may prevent recurrence and improve survival after removal of early-stage lung cancer.
  • Stage II Lung Cancer—A multi-institutional randomized trial of preoperative chemotherapy. This protocol was developed at Columbia University Medical Center. Several medical centers around the country are participating in this clinical trial.
  • Stage IV Lung Cancer—In patients with advanced lung cancer that have failed to respond to chemotherapy, there are several research protocols currently being evaluated. Many of these novel therapies, which include chemotherapy or vaccines, are only available at Columbia University Medical Center.
  • Thoracic Aortic Stent-Graft—A new approach to thoracic aneurysm.
  • VENT—A minimally invasive approach to emphysema. (Mark E. Ginsburg, MD, 2004)

Lung Transplant Research Protocols

  • Immunoglobulin G (IgG) Levels before and after Lung Transplantation
  • Neurocognitive Dysfunction in Lung Transplant Candidates
  • The Role of Activated Protein C in Early ARDS and Lung Transplantation
  • Neurohormal Activation in Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Comparison of a Tacrolimus/Sirolimus/Prednisone Regimen vs. Standard Immunosuppressive Regimen in Lung Transplantation
  • Platelet Function after Lung Transplantation
  • Micro array Analysis of BAL in Acute Rejection after Lung Transplantation
  • Micro array Analysis of Peripheral Blood in Solid Organ Transplantation
  • Prospective Randomized Trial of Protractin vs. Perfadex for Optimization of Lung Procurement and Storage
