Abdominal Wall
Sometimes, after general surgery, or a complication of prior surgery, a patient may have a large abdominal hernia or an opening of the abdominal wall. In these instances, a plastic surgeon can achieve closure of the opening or hernia through a variety of techniques. These procedures are often performed with a general surgeon who can address any intra-abdominal concerns. Muscle flaps from the abdomen or other areas of the body can be used with biologic or synthetic materials to achieve lasting closure and integrity of the abdominal wall. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the option best suited to your particular problem.
Anesthesia
General anesthesia is used for these procedures.
Before Surgery
- Follow the general surgeon's instructions regarding bowel preparation before surgery.
- Avoid taking aspirin, Advil, Motrin, or other aspirin-containing products for two weeks.
- If you are a smoker, stop smoking to aid in healing.
Recovery
You will likely be given an abdominal binder to wear at all times post-operatively. You will likely stay in the hospital for several days.
Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or exercise for at least six weeks post-operatively.
