The NewYork-Presbyterian Lung Transplant Program at Columbia University Medical Center has received Medicare certification for lung transplantation. Medicare covers eligible patients who enter our program for preoperative evaluation, lung transplant surgery and postoperative care.

In certifying the NYP Lung Transplant Program, Medicare recognizes the outstanding results achieved by Joshua R. Sonett, MD, Surgical Director, and Selim M. Arcasoy, MD, Medical Director, and their team:

Lung transplants performed during July 1, 2001 – July 31, 2008 at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia have a one-year survival rate of 92% and four-year survival rate of 71%.

The July 2008 SRTR (Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients) data reported New York-Presbyterian Lung Transplant program to have the highest three year Patient patient and graft survival rates compared nationally to the other Lung transplant Centers in the US.

These excellent outcomes, which far exceed average national outcomes, are especially significant because of the Program's high-risk patient base. hese results reflect the dedication of the Lung Transplant Program's experienced multidisciplinary team, and the comprehensive support of the Columbia Weill Cornell faculty and staff, whose first priority is quality of care.

Transplantation is one of several therapeutic options for advanced lung disease that is offered through the NewYork-Presbyterian Lung Transplant Program; others include

  • Management of co-morbidities of advanced lung disease
  • Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for emphysema
  • Advanced minimally invasive and robotic techniques for lung and diaphragmatic surgery
  • Recommendations for novel therapy regimens directly through our program or others, such as Cystic Fibrosis Center, Pulmonary Fibrosis, and Pulmonary Hypertension Programs
