Your Kidney Transplant Immunosuppressant Medications


Antiviral Medications

Zovirax® (acyclovir), Cytovene® (ganciclovir), and Valcyte® (valganciclovir)

PurposeUsed to prevent or treat viral (herpes) infections often found in the mouth or genital area.
DosageZovirax is available in capsules of 200mg and 800mg. Available in liquid formulation at a 200mg/5cc concentration.

Adult dosage is typically 200 to 800mg taken 3 to 4 times per day for 3 months following transplantation.

Pediatric dosage is based on body weight.

WhenIf you miss a dose of any of these medications, take it as soon as you can. Do not double dose.
Common Side EffectsSide effects are rare but can include lowered white blood cell count.
