Henry M. Spotnitz, MD, has been awarded the 2009 Alfred M. Markowitz Service Award by the Society of Practitioners of the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

Tracey Arnell Named Glenda Garvey Teaching Fellow
Dr. Arnell is one of 13 new fellows announced by the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy during April 2009.
Established in 2005 to honor the educational commitment of the late Glenda Garvey, MD, the Garvey Academy rewards and strengthens teaching by identifying top educators and encouraging them to maintain the highest standards in teaching and to improve the medical center's educational mission by seeking innovation in teaching and learning.
New York Komen Affiliate Award Goes to Dr. Joseph
Kathie-Ann P. Joseph, MD, MPH, has received the 2009 Susan G. Komen Greater New York City Gay Clark Stoddard Memorial Award.
According to New York City branch of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure national grassroots organization, the annual award recognizes a clinician who "goes beyond what is required and treats breast cancer patients with compassion, dignity, skill, support, inspiration, a sense of humor, understanding, and honesty in the course of their care."
American Legacy Foundation Award
Mehmet C. Oz, MD received the American Legacy Foundation 2009 Humanitarianism in Medicine and Public Health Award for his contribution as an influential leader in the fight against smoking.
Dr. Allendorf Awarded 2nd Annual Forde Grant
The annual $10,000 Kenneth A. Forde Surgical Research Grant was awarded to John Allendorf, MD, for research directed at pancreatic cancer and entitled, "RAGE signaling and pancreatic cancer tumorigenesis."
Dr. Chabot is 2008 Attending Physician of the Year
John A. Chabot, MD, was selected 2008 Attending Physician of the Year by the Nursing Service of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
2008-2009 Startup Grant Recipients Named
The Department of Surgery startup grants are awarded to a team of an attending mentor and a junior investigator who can be a resident, fellow or medical student.
The grants are intended to lead to external funding.

Dr. Guarrera Receives HRSA Support for Organ Preservation Work
James Guarrera, MD, received a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant for $746K to continue his work in liver preservation.

2008 AAP Salzberg Mentorship Award Goes to Dr. Altman
Dr. Peter Altman is this year's recipient of the Arnold M. Salzberg Mentorship Award, which is given annually the American Academy of Pediatrics in recognition of a pediatric surgeon who has distinguished him/herself as a mentor of pediatric surgical trainees.
The Division of Surgical Science in the Department of Surgery of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, which has been studying the biological pathways of degeneration in the human body for nearly 15 years, has recently received more than $8M from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to study age-related cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Joseph is Co-PI of Breast Tumor Ablation Trial
Kathie-Ann P. Joseph, MD, MPH, is co-PI of an NIH R21-funded trial investigating harmonic motion imaging as a new method to detect and ablate breast tumors.
The R21 grant mechanism is meant to encourage new, exploratory, developmental research and has a two-year grant cycle.
The study is a collaboration with Elisa Konofaou, PhD, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering; Eliza Pile-Spellman, MD, in the Department of Radiology; Roger Vaughan, DrPhD, in the Department of Biostatics; and Thomas Ludwig, MD, Department of Pathology.
