Fecal Incontinence Program
Fecal Incontinence is the impaired ability to control gas or stool and can result from multiple pregnancies, delivering larger weight babies, forceps deliveries, or episiotomies. These can cause lasting nerve damage or muscle injury. A quick physical exam can identify obvious injury to the anal muscles. Manometry to measure the strength of anal muscles can be performed in the office to diagnose less obvious injuries. Another Office diagnostic test can assess nerve damage. Patients are taught biofeedback techniques using special equipment that enables them to better sense when stool is ready to be eliminated and to help strengthen the anal muscles.
