Cystic Fibrosis in Adults
Columbia Presbyterian Cystic Fibrosis Treatment Center is fully accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and provides care annually for over 175 individuals with CF, with nearly 40% of those patients being adults.
The CF Treatment Center is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of adult and pediatric pulmonary physicians, gastroenterologists, genetic counselors, nutritionists, physical therapists, a nurse clinician and a social worker.
The Center participates in clinical research trials studying new treatments for the management of cystic fibrosis.
The Columbia Presbyterian Cystic Fibrosis Center has participated in milestone studies including the Pulmozyme trial, the Thairapy Vest trial, and the TOBI trial.
Cystic Fibrosis Research at Columbia University
Columbia University has a long track record in basic scientific contributions to the field of cystic fibrosis.
Several renowned scientists from the institution have laboratories dedicated to the further understanding of the disease.
These investigators are working with major support from the NIH and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Specifically, investigators from Columbia have made major contributions to understanding the electrolyte abnormalities in CF, as well as the mechanisms of lung inflammation in this disease.
Collaborative Care of CF Patients at Columbia
Physicians of the Cystic Fibrosis Center work closely with the lung transplantation team at Columbia Presbyterian Center, providing ready access to the Transplant Center for evaluation.
Following lung transplantation, physicians from the transplant and the cystic fibrosis teams work closely together in the continued care of patients.
