Craig R. Smith, MD Chief Surgeon
Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center
Dr. Smith directs HeartSource clinical operations and surgeon education, and is responsible for surgeon appointments for HeartSource clients.
In his role as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Columbia he provides leadership to the on-call Columbia cardiac surgeons who provide clinical support to HeartSource clients around the clock. |
Paul Kurlansky, MD Director, Research, Recruitment, and CQI
An alumnus of the Columbia cardiovascular surgery training program, Dr. Kurlansky has distinguished himself in both clinical and academic heart surgery.
He currently heads the prestigious Miami Heart Research Institute and has extensive experience in all aspects of clinical cardiac surgery, quality improvement, and cutting-edge scientific research.
With his expertise in data management and research, combined with his surgical experience, Dr. Kurlansky is an important link between the HeartSource surgical and service-line management teams and is an invaluable member of the recruitment team. |
Solomon A. Torres, MPA, CHE Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Torres is Chief Financial Officer in the Columbia University Department of Surgery.
He works with HeartSource client service-line administrators and hospital CEOs to set up and run efficient and effective cardiac surgery programs.
He is a senior healthcare executive with over 20 years' experience in a wide range of academic, medical center, and community hospital operations.
His experience includes senior management of hospitals, academic departments, and physician practice plans. |
Lawrence Beilis, MHA Executive Director
Working with HeartSource client service-line administrators and hospital CEOs, Mr. Beilis executes and manages all aspects of the HeartSource client MSA, from planning design of new OR facilities to developing the client's service-line, to overseeing the client's QA database protocols and teleconferencing needs.
Mr. Beilis, a management executive with expertise in operations management, business economics, and hospital information systems, is Director of Operations for the Columbia Department of Surgery and has worked with Columbia HeartSource clients/Columbia HeartSource Community affiliates for ten years. |
Colette Forde, RN, MSN, CNM Nurse Manager for CQI, Database Management and Nurse Education
Ms. Forde has 23 years of experience in the nursing profession with expertise in cardiac surgery data management and performance improvement.
She is in charge of nurse education for HeartSource, including nursing grand rounds and nurse training. She works collaboratively with quality improvement and data management personnel throughout the Columbia HeartSource Community of hospitals to provide outcomes data to support quality initiatives such as mortality and morbidity conferences.
Additional responsibilities include monitoring medical management and performance improvement initiatives, as well as providing guidance for the HeartSource client's quality action plan.
Ms. Forde organizes monthly nursing grand rounds for HeartSource client hospitals and works with new and experienced nurses who wish to enhance their skills by participating in a structured orientation program. |
Diane Amato Billing and Compliance Director
Ms. Amato is Administrator for the Columbia University Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.
In addition to providing billing and compliance expertise to HeartSource, Ms. Amato provides guidance for HeartSource client practice operations.
With 30 years of experience administrating cardiac surgery groups, Ms. Amato manages a staff of 28 health care professionals in Columbia's Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and oversees the operations of its surgeons' practice.
In addition, she serves as an outreach coordinator for Craig Smith, MD, Chief of the division, providing medical information and practical support for patients and families. |
Jennifer Quill Recruitment Coordinator
Ms. Quill coordinates surgeon appointments and promotions for HeartSource clients.
At Columbia, she is Operations Manager and Administrative Assistant to the Chief of the Cardiothoracic Division and is Program Coordinator for the Thoracic Surgery Residency Program. |
Michelle Castro Credentialing and Licensure Coordinator
Ms. Castro coordinates the HeartSource client licensure for state and regulatory agencies and credentialing with insurance carriers.
She is also Credentialing and Licensure Coordinator for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Columbia. |
Deborah Schwarz-McGregor, PA Director, Marketing and Communications
Ms. Schwarz-McGregor is Executive Director, External Affairs and Chief Communications Officer in the Columbia University Department of Surgery.
She worked at Columbia for 11 years as a physician's assistant in adult and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery prior to her career in healthcare communications.
She and her team plan and execute continuing medical education and other events, produce printed and web-based marketing and communications collateral, and conduct marketing campaigns for physicians and medical programs. |
