Columbia HeartSource
Program Development & Leadership

Columbia HeartSource builds new programs and helps troubled programs recover.

New Programs

Program Development & Leadership

We build new cardiac care programs from pre-Certificate of Need to successful cardiac surgical service by:

  • Assisting in designing and managing construction of clinical and support space required for a successful cardiac surgery program;
  • Facilitating appropriate coverage and support arrangements for anesthesia, perfusion, and the operating environment;
  • Recruiting faculty;
  • Providing strategic planning for integration of surgical services with the institution's cardiac service-line;
  • Furnishing clinical supervision and support; and
  • Establishing a robust reputation and referral community for the program.
"Low volume programs require superior quality," says Dr. Robert Lancey, cardiothoracic surgeon at Columbia HeartSource Community affiliate Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, New York. "Columbia HeartSource is good at initiating, revitalizing, and improving programs by standardizing protocols and pooling our collective experience."

Existing Programs

"When Stamford decided to pursue a Certificate of Need to perform open heart surgery, Columbia was the obvious partner," says Brian Grissler, CEO of Stamford Medical Center, a 305-bed acute-care community hospital in Stamford, Connecticut. "We went with Columbia because we wanted a first-class facility for our community."

For existing programs, we undertake a comprehensive review of workflow, clinical and nursing protocols, staffing patterns, clinical pathways, and existing facilities. We then make recommendations on how to improve outcomes and maximize efficiency, including implementing a system of quality assessment. Working with hospital executives, we provide leadership for transition and change, and we furnish clinical supervision to help the program return to efficient operation. We work with the program's surgeons and help the client to recruit new surgeons, building a team with top-notch clinical, leadership, and research skills. In these ways, Columbia HeartSource has restored previously faltering programs to clinical excellence.

For both new and existing programs, Columbia HeartSource can assist in optimizing professional billing, securing the maximum reimbursement allowed by managed care, Medicare, Medicaid, and direct patient payment.
