SPECIALTIES OF SURGERY

The residency in surgery is a gateway to several clinical specialties. These include, but are not limited to, general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, colorectal surgery, endocrine surgery, oncologic surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery and vascular surgery. Follow the links on the toolbar to the left to learn more about each of these areas of clinical surgery. Each linked page includes an interview with one of Columbia's surgeons, objective information about training and salaries, and online videos of selected procedures.

An additional excellent resource for students considering surgery as a career is offered by the American College of Surgeons, entitled, "So, You Want to Be a Surgeon: a medical student's online guide to finding and matching with the best possible surgical residency." This site includes information on "surgical traits," insights on different types of careers in surgery, listings of accredited training programs, and advice on how to secure a place at one's residency program of choice.
