Opportunities for Students Laparoscopic Workshop
A defining trend of modern surgery is the move to minimize the physiologic stress caused by surgical procedures through the use of "minimally-invasive" techniques.
In addition to providing results for patients that are cosmetically superior and less painful, these techniques may in fact permit superior outcomes by reducing impairment of post-operative immune function.

The next generation of surgeons will rely on minimally invasive techniques from the start of their training.
P&S students have the opportunity to begin developing these skills in their second year.
Using real-life and virtual laparoscopy simulators at Columbia's state of the art Minimal Access Surgery Center, students can hone their hand-eye-screen coordination under the instruction of an attending Columbia surgeon.
Skill-building exercises include manipulating small beads, passing objects between right and left instruments, camera navigation, and stacking sugar cubes.
Challenges include ligating vessels, threading "catheters" into "bile ducts," and keeping cool under pressure to control an arterial bleed.
