Mehmet C. Oz, MD is Director of the Cardiovascular Institute and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery, a cardiothoracic surgeon, as well as a Professor of Surgery.
Dr. Oz is a graduate of Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and the Wharton School of Business.
In recent years, he has integrated complementary medicine into his clinical practice at Columbia.
Dr. Oz is the author of Healing from the Heart: A Leading Heart Surgeon Explores the Power of Complementary Medicine, published in 1998,

Erin L. Olivo, PhD, MPH

Erin L. Olivo, PhD, MPH is a clinical psychologist who holds a joint faculty appointment in The Departments of Surgery and Psychiatry at Columbia University.
Dr. Olivo is a graduate of Duke University, and holds master's degrees in both Public Health and Social Work from Columbia University. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Teachers CollegeColumbia University. Her clinical and research experience includes working with cardiology, oncology and psychiatric populations. She has both clinical and research interest in the use of mind-body strategies in both medical and mental health settings. In addition to directing the Integrative Medicine Program, Dr. Olivo maintains a private clinical psychology practice in which she specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and clinical behavioral medicine. |
Melissa Stewart, MSSW, CHT Clinical Services Coordinator

Melissa Stewart, LCSW, CHT received her Masters of Science in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
She is a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Advanced Practitioner of Gestalt Psychotherapy.
Melissa is trained in the Reiki System of Natural Healing (levels I & II).
Over the past fifteen years, she gained professional experience at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics, the Center for Patient Partnerships at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Wisconsin Psychotherapy & Healing Center.
She has provided holistic care and counseling to individuals, families and groups regarding adjustment to life-challenging illness, particularly cancer and heart disease.
Her clinical interests include honoring and supporting people during natural life cycle events and the integration of mind, body and spirit through Whole Person Care. |
Brooke Dodson-Lavelle, MA Research Coordinator

Brooke Dodson-Lavelle graduated from Barnard College with a degree in Religion & Psychology and holds a master's degree in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies from Columbia University. She is interested in Tibetan Medicine and its current healthcare applications and has researched the effects of modernization and integration on the healthcare system in a Tibetan refugee camp in South India. Brooke studies meditation and yoga, has trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and leads cardiac yoga and mindfulness meditation programs at the Medical Center. |
Jeremy Tallent Research Coordinator

After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in religion and psychology, Jeremy gained research experience in the field of sleep medicine. His research interests cover a range of complementary therapies, including botanicals and mind-body medicine, as well as the social dimensions of health and healing. His current focus is assisting in the development of research methodologies examining the effects of meditation and related practices on cardiovascular health. |
Kathleen T. Ullmann, MS, LMT Licensed Massage Therapist
Kathleen Ullmann is an early childhood special educator and a licensed massage therapist.
Over the past decade, she has integrated her trainings in AMMA Therapy, reflexology, CranioSacral therapy, lymphatic drainage, pregnancy massage and infant massage instruction in order to provide CAM services to a broad population both at NYPH and the outside community.
Kathleen is a graduate of Adelphi University and The New York College, where she taught foundation courses in traditional Chinese medicine.
Kathleen has also earned her certification in Feng Shui and is currently exploring common themes in Feng Shui practices and Western religious rituals. |
Ruth Rogers, Esq, LMT Licensed Massage Therapist
Ruth Rogers is a NY State Licensed Massage Therapist. A graduate of the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences, she specializes in Shiatsu and Trauma Care. Ruth is a certified Trauma Touch™ therapist and has worked extensively with members of the Fire Department of New York and with survivors of suicide bomb attacks in Israel. She has a private practice in New York City and is registered as a Certified Practitioner with the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia.
